There’s an odd curiosity about the two semi-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games we will see play out on Tuesday evening in Lyon and Marseille respectively.
That is despite the fact this tournament is less than two weeks old, we’ve already seen both match-ups in this competition already.
With Group A completely eliminated after losses for all three of hosts France, holders Canada and a heartbreaking defeat for Colombia, it leaves Groups B and C to go head-to-head, with the USA facing Germany in Lyon before Brazil take on Spain on the Riviera.
Spain and Brazil met as recently as last Wednesday, with the world champions coming out on top in a 2-0 win, while it’s just over a week since Emma Hayes’ USA side battered Germany 4-1 to make a statement in Group C.

Ordinarily, teams don’t usually have to think about facing the same team again, but it throws up an interesting dynamic for the USA and Spain in particular, both safe in the knowledge Brazil and Germany will be looking to learn key lessons and won’t necessarily expect just because they won last week for lightning to simply strike twice.
"I think it's almost like obviously having that under our belt…of having played them, but I think it's the opposite mindset for us,” said Trinity Rodman, who scored the quarter-final winner against Japan.
“Even though it's the same opponent, it's going to be a very different game. They could bring out changes, they could do something completely different tactically, they could push numbers back to defend.
“For us, we have to focus more on us and not them.”
