“I’m a bit tired, but apart from that, all good,” says Laura Freigang.

For context, the Eintracht Frankfurt star is speaking at 8:30am the night after her side has given up a 2-1 lead in stoppage time to lose 3-2 away at SC Freiburg, a huge blow for their Bundesliga title hopes.

While they’re still on for a superb season and potential Champions League qualification once again, Freigang appears less flustered than I expected, half worried the interview would be postponed.

But across 45 minutes speaking to the Germany international forward, it soon becomes evident her outlook on football mirrors her outlook on life, and how the two are constantly intertwined.

“I think I’ve always worked hard and always tried to do my best, that was never the issue,” she says, reflecting across a career which has now seen her gain the recognition she deserves as one of Europe’s top forwards, not that she’s chasing personal accolades.

“I definitely consider myself a hard worker, I wouldn’t have made it this far otherwise. I think the difference has been settling into myself more, the kind of player and person I am, what I need and don’t need to perform, and not being too hard on myself.

“I can’t separate the human I am from the player I am, so being kind to myself, understanding who I am and letting myself be myself within this crazy world of professional football. You have to be honest, it’s not always a healthy environment, but you know yourself better year after year and what works for you, and I think it has just come together for me.”

Across our interview, we discuss Frankfurt’s current position, the progress of the team since merging with Eintracht Frankfurt, the upcoming Euro 2025, and Freigang’s decision to move to the USA for college, all experiences which have given Freigang perspective on where she is at today.

Despite defeat the previous night, it is, in Freigang’s words, the team’s “best season so far” since former European champions 1. FFC Frankfurt merged with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2020.

“Over the span of the last six years I’ve been here, certainly. Up until last night, we were definitely in consideration for playing for the title, which was the first time in a long time for this club. Of course, it is still possible to catch Bayern, who are six points ahead of Eintracht - but despite the direct duel on 12 April at Deutsche Bank Park, it is difficult.”

“We’re still second, but obviously after yesterday it was a blow for us, but overall, we’ve played a really good season. We have a great group of girls, and we play a way of football which is very fun to watch and very fun for us to play. We scored a lot and have been really solid defensively, other than the past month or so where for some reason we’ve struggled a bit more.”
