Tactics Talk with Lina Magull
The current Inter Milan midfielder discusses Bundesliga vs Serie A, the players she has enjoyed playing both with and against, as well as analysing the major finals she has played in...
After leaving behind her homeland of Germany for the first time just over 12 months ago to sign for Inter Milan in Italy’s Serie A, midfielder Lina Magull has returned to the top of her game.
She was for so long one of the talismanic figures of a successful Bayern Munich side, captaining the team for three years, winning multiple Bundesliga titles, all off the back of winning the Champions League with rivals Wolfsburg when she was a teenager.
Magull though needed a refresh, but not long after helping pull Germany to the final of Euro 2022, where she scored at Wembley against England, Magull has reminded everyone she’s still one of the finest midfielders in the European game, and is the latest to talk about her playing career in-depth in WFC’s latest Tactics Talk feature, discussing that final against the Lionesses, how she’s adapted to Serie A, and creating important partnerships in the middle of the pitch…

“So far, very satisfied with the season,” says Magull, with Inter currently sat second in Serie A, the nearest challengers to likely champions Juventus, but as the 30-year-old puts it, “better than last season”, when Inter finished fifth in Serie A.
After a significant recruitment drive over the past 18 months, which included the coup of signing Magull when she decided to leave Bayern, Inter have really progressed rapidly over the course of the season.
“We have a new coaching team, new players, some with a lot of experience, and that makes it very special here right now. We have a lot of top players, some really good young players, and a lot of different cultures which makes it even more interesting. We have different characters and how we are working as a team is going really well.
“I’m really comfortable here so far. We’re second in the league, trying to improve week by week. I came here to find a new challenge and the club has been really good in finding those players for this level and we are working on winning games, because the last games we struggled a little, and that bothers me, so hopefully we end strongly.”
Her final words show the mentality Magull is bringing to the city of Milan. While winning would be a new phenomenon for Inter as a women’s team, Magull has won four Bundesliga titles, two Champions League titles, an Under 20 World Cup and an Olympic gold medal.
Magull made over 200 appearances in the Bundesliga, including for both of the nation’s major women’s clubs, and just as though it looked impossible we’d see the midfielder outside her home country, she switched to Inter in January 2024.
It has given her the opportunity to experience a new league and a new way of life, so has it been a major change from what she became used to in Germany?
