11 goals in just two games is quite the feat for any team, but that’s where world champions Spain are at right now as they sealed their place in the quarter-finals with a 6-2 win against Belgium. They’ll face Italy in the final round of games with Andrea Soncin’s side denied joining them in the quarter-finals by a late Portugal equaliser.

Spain in full flow are a joy…

Let’s be clear first up here, despite how good Spain are to watch, that felt like a harsh scoreline on a Belgium side who had the world champions rattled for at least 50 minutes.

When it went to 2-2 five minutes after half-time, one wondered which way the game was going to go, but the second of two equalisers almost angered Spain into action, with four goals without reply allowing the favourites for the tournament to run out 6-2 winners.

The last half an hour was not far off mesmerising. It took Spain less than two minutes to respond to the equaliser when Esther González fired home her third of the tournament, before further goals from Mariona Caldentey, a stunner from Claudia Pina and another for Alexia Putellas - who registered two goals and two assists during the match - put a clinical seal on things.

As if to rub it in, Aitana Bonmatí was introduced at half-time and seconds after Pina’s fifth, she was brought off to be replaced by Salma Paralluelo. An embarrassment of riches doesn’t quite do it justice, but Spain overall laid down another marker, reaching 11 goals in just two games.
