Paris 2024 Olympics, Day One Review
Canada overcame their drone scandal to record a late win, while USA, Germany and Brazil looked impressive in their own performances...
Viens grabs her moment
Evelyne Viens' international record stacked up against her club record never quite made much sense coming into this Olympic Games.
Yes, Canada has never had the reputation of being a high-scoring team putting away gallons of goals a game, but the AS Roma forward came into this tournament with just five goals in 31 caps, only one more goal than she had heading into the World Cup 12 months ago.
Yet domestically she has been one of the most clinical in Europe for several years, whether it be her 11 in 14 for Paris FC, 33 in 43 or Kristianstad or 13 in 24 for the Serie A champions last season.
But in one fleeting moment against New Zealand Viens showed exactly why she can be the forward to turn around Canada's fortunes as they look for a regular scorer in the number nine role.
It was a clinical piece of play, a cutting first-time finish which wasn't easy to execute, and hopefully it's the kick-starter on Viens' international career.
