Watching Chawinga shine is a joy
Tabitha Chawinga may still somehow remain relatively unknown to a corner of the women’s football world. At 26, she’s no longer the young superstar who burst onto the scene in Sweden and left again with a goal scoring record figure higher than the number of appearances she made, but she is showing she is very much one of the most accomplished forwards on the planet.
Representing Malawi along with sister Temwa, sadly we may never see Chawinga at a World Cup, but fingers crossed we do, because she is showing once again this season she can perform in a high-level league, having joined Inter Milan on loan at the start of the season from Wuhan in China.
Inter may not be in a title race with AS Roma threatening to run away with things, but Chawinga has proven instrumental in keeping her side in the tight race for a Champions League spot. Her late goal on Sunday against Sassuolo was her 13th of the season in just 16 games and cemented her place as the top scorer in the league, two clear of Juventus’s Cristiana Girelli. For those who have followed Chawinga for many years, it’s brilliant to see her flourishing in a top European league.
